John Theofanis, a native New Yorker and longtime Austinite, is a classic late bloomer. He came to painting relatively recently. John did drawings with Sharpie and crayon on an infrequent basis in his thirties and forties. In 2016 John was inspired to pick up a paintbrush and began constructing with color. His canvases often focus on what is nearby—flowers, melons and vegetables on chopping boards and random scenes around his house. Color is the key and a simple, direct approach to his subjects define John’s work.
